Every day is Memorial Day on the Minerd.com website. Since the site’s founding in 2000, the site has told the stories of hundreds upon hundreds of cousins in the extended clan who have served our country during both wartime and peacetime.

In the course of serving our nation, far too many of our cousins have made the ultimate sacrifice of giving their lives during wartime. On its “Honor Roll: Wartime Military Casualties” webpage, Minerd.com highlights their names and photographs (where known) to honor their memory so they will never be forgotten.

Civil War (8):

Leroy Bush – 9th Indiana Cavalry, Company B – died of typhoid fever – buried at Greenfield, IN.

John Irving White – 85th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry – wounded at Battle of Fort Wagner, SC – died at Morris Island, SC – buried at Beaufort National Cemetery, SC.

Leonard Rowan – 85th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry – died of paralysis – buried at Hampton National Cemetery, VA.

Burkett M. Fawcett – 3rd West Virginia Volunteer Infantry – killed at Battle of White Sulphur Springs, WV – burial site unknown.

Adrian Johnston – 14th Pennsylvania Cavalry – drowned crossing the Jackson River, Covington, VA – burial site unknown.

Albert Miner – 19th Ohio Volunteer Infantry – died of smallpox as POW in Danville Confederate General Hospital, Danville, VA – burial site unknown.

Andrew Jackson Miner – 90th Ohio Volunteer Infantry – died of severe diarrhea at Vining Station, VA – buried at Marietta National Cemetery, GA.

Jacob M. Younkin – 85th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry – killed at Battle of Seven Pines/Fair Oaks, VA – burial site unknown.

Philippine Insurrection/Spanish American War (1):

Albert Herrington – 20th U.S. Infantry – died of injuries when struck by horse and buggy in Honolulu, HI – buried in San Francisco National Cemetery, CA.

World War I (5):

Claude Alderman – 126th Infantry, 32nd Division – killed at the Battle of Chateau Thierry, France – body never recovered or identified.

Horace Gibson – U.S. Army – died of influenza at Camp Meade, MD – buried at Campground Cemetery near Tunnelton, WV.

George T. McDonald – U.S. Army – died of influenza at Fort Riley, KS.

William Curtis McKnight – 205th Infantry, 80th Division – killed in railroad wreck near Paris, France – buried in Dickerson Run Cemetery near Vanderbilt, PA.

Raymond G. White – 7th Infantry – killed in action in France – buried in Hopwood Cemetery near Uniontown, PA.

World War II (12):

Jack Barr – U.S. Army – killed in New Guinea – burial site unknown.

Lloyd Frederick “Buddy” Harbaugh Jr. – killed in the Battle of the Bulge, Belgium – burial site unknown.

Jack Jennings – U.S. Army Air Corps – died during the Bataan Death March – buried in Monessen, PA.

William C. McClain – killed during the D-Day invasion of France – buried at Sylvan Heights Cemetery, Uniontown, PA.

Oliver Wendell Minard – flight officer – died in England – buried at Alta Mesa Memorial Park, Palo Alto, CA.

Robert Vernon Oberdorf Jr. – 319th Division – killed during the Battle of the Bulge, Belgium – buried at Hamm Cemetery in Luxembourg.

Earl Jack Peters – U.S. Navy – killed in the sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis after delivery of the A-bomb – lost at sea.

Alvin Glen Ream – killed in Germany – buried at Somerset County Memorial Park, Somerset, PA.

Richard Nathan Reese – 6100 B.A.M. Battalion – died in action at Dorchester, England – buried at Greenlick Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, PA.

Harold Frank Rodeheaver – U.S. Army, 14th Armored Division – killed in the Battle of the Bulge, Belgium – buried at Lafayette Memorial Park near Uniontown, PA.

Orville Turney – U.S. Army, 7th Infantry, 3rd Division – killed at Anzio, Italy – buried at Hill Grove Cemetery, Connellsville, PA

Louis E. Younkin – U.S. Army Air Force – shot down over Germany – lost.

Korea (5):

William H. Dickinson – U.S. Army – killed in railroad accident near Mentz, France – buried at Decatur Cemetery near Cutler, OH.

James W. Minerd – 34th Infantry, 24th Division – killed in action near Pusan perimeter. Buried at Hopwood Cemetery near Uniontown, PA.

Robert L. Shipley – U.S. Air Force – died in air crash in the Sea of Japan – buried at Sylvania Hills Memorial Park, Rochester, PA.

Alton Glen Sterner – 5th Combat Team – killed in Korea – buried at Rockwood Odd Fellows Cemetery, Rockwood, PA.

Minor Fay White – U.S. Air Force – killed in C-124 crash at McChord Air Force Base, Tacoma, WA – buried at Wichita Park Cemetery, Wichita, KS.

Vietnam (2):

Lawrence Frederick Greer – U.S. Marine Corps – killed in action in QuangTri Province, Vietnam – buried in Canonsburg, PA.

John Louis Morgan Jr. – 31st Infantry, 9th Division – killed in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam – buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, Zanesville, OH.

Iraq War (1):

Erick M. Foster – 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division – killed in action in Muqdadiyah, Iraq. Buried in Oil City, PA.
